Dolpo captures the felling of Nepal‘s Wild West, with its Central Square and local taverns serving local apple raksi.  The trek follows an old trade route east; crossing several passes (3,840m) before reaching the fortress town of  Upper Dolpa.  From here, the trail turns northward; approaching wide grassy valley of Dhorpatan (2,760m),  Lake Phoksundo (3,650m/ ), the sparkling turquoise lake set below Shey Gompa with its hilltop fortress and Tibetan-like inhabitants. The azure colored lake will be a memorable sight indeed.   Once lakeshore, you can day hike to a near by ridge top for views of the western Himalayas.  The hardy people of Dolpa inhabit these ancient scattered villages you will encounter along the way.  Some still practice the pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet, Bon, in their centuries old monasteries.  The landscape is full of Himalayan wildlife such as, the protected blue sheep and musk beer that reside in this remote national park.
