For those of you who think that you have trekked it all, the Nar Phu trek is probably the best off-the-beaten-trail in the Annapurna region. This is a region for those who want to explore hidden valley and cross over challenging high passes like Kyang La (5,315 m) and Thorung La (5,416 m). From Kyang La, we will have the opportunity to take in the magnificent panorama of the Annapurna massif amidst the swirls of mountain mist. The Nar and Phu valleys lie above the tree line in the northernmost reaches of Manang district. The trek up to Nar and Phu combines towering snow-peaks and passes, glaciers, remote villages with their own unique and untouched culture, narrow canyons, lovely forests, amazing rock formations, yaks and gompas. Situated at a distance of about two days of walking from the border with Tibet, this region was first explored by Tilman in the 1950s. Closed to trekkers until late 2002, very few westerners have explored these virtually untouched villages or climbed the many 7,000-m peaks surrounding it. The Nepal government's decision to open up Nar and Phu to tourists in 2003 evoked little enthusiasm among the villagers, whose pastoral lifestyle continues. Apart from the odd researcher and climbing expeditions permitted to climb Him lung, Ratnachuli and Gachikang, few foreigners have visited the area and tourism infrastructure is almost non-existent, making the trip even more out of the ordinary.
We will venture into this remote region of Upper Manang, camping along the way, and visit some of the most unexplored and interesting villages in the region. Along with spending plenty of time in these colorful and timeless villages, we can also explore the high alpine valleys above Phu before crossing Kang La pass from Nar leading back to the Annapurna circuit trail and heading on to Jomsom for our flight to Pokhara and onward to Kathmandu.
