Beside normal trekking trips, Cho-Oyu Trekking also organizes exhilarating programs that combine trekking with what are known as "trekking peak" climbing both for beginners as well as for experienced climbers. On our trekking peak climbs, you will get to savor the Himalaya from afar but will also get a unique opportunity to actually climb one of the 33 authorized "trekking peaks" (with altitudes below 7,000 m) that have been opened by the Government of Nepal. The climbing permits for these peaks are issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association as opposed to the expedition peaks whose permits are issued by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.
A bit more demanding and adventurous in nature than our regular trekking trips, Cho-Oyu's trekking peak programs give you the unique opportunity to climb real Himalayan summits. And though these "trekking peaks" are not as high in altitude as the expedition peaks, climbing them is no mean feat. Moreover, although most of these trekking peak climbing programs require little or no previous mountaineering experience, good physical fitness and an extensive outdoor background are essential. This is the reason why before commencing on one of these trips from Kathmandu, we will first be taking you to a local rock climbing area in order to teach you the basics of handling ropes and other climbing equipment. Furthermore, we shall also be taking time to learn more about handling various climbing gear and, at the same time, gaining more knowledge about safety considerations in the mountains during the course of the trek itself. All climbs on our trips are guided by competent guides who have years of experience and, therefore, are knowledgeable about each trekking peak and its environs. Join one of our summit challenge trips and discover the joy of climbing the Himalayas - a privilege that was once enjoyed only by ‘expedition climbers’.
All the trekking peak climbing programs that we offer are organized in the popular trekking areas, mainly the Everest, Annapurna and Langtang regions, which have relatively easy access to trekking peaks that we will be climbing. Most of these trips can be completed within a short period of time. For instance, Naya Khang in the Langtang valley can be completed in less than 20 days with plenty of time allocated for acclimatization.
Some of the trekking peaks that can be combined with one of our regular trekking programs include Imja Tse or Island Peak (6,189 m), the most popular, and Mera Peak (6,645 m) in the Khumbu (Everest) region; Chulu West Peak (6,419 m), Singu Chuli Peak (6,501 m), Pisang Peak (6,019 m), Chulu East Peak (6,584 m) and Tent Peak (5,663 m) in the Annapurna region; Naya Kang Peak (5,844m) and Yala Peak (5,732 m) in the upper Langtang Valley; and Parchermo Peak (6,270 m) in the Rolwaling Valley among others.
The following are just a few of the “Trekking with Peak Climbing” programs that Cho-Oyu Trekking organizes in different parts of the Himalaya. These programs are customized for those who love the Himalaya and enjoy climbing its mountains without having to join full scale expeditions that are more time consuming and require a lot of climbing experience and the technicalities associated with it, not to mention the physical and mental endurance aspects.
