Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), coined from the Sanskrit words dhavala giri, meaning "White Mountain", is an enormous hulk of rock and snow. The seventh highest mountain in the world, Dhaulagiri is the only 'eight-thousander' that is located entirely within Nepal.
The crest of this gigantic massif stretches for 30 miles, lending some kind of a structure to an otherwise tangled topography of twisting ridges, glaciers and ice falls. Several pyramid-shaped peaks rise along the mountain's main crest. Four of these summits, numbered serially from east to west, rise above 25,000 feet.
It was only after Dhaulagiri's discovery by the Western world in 1808 was Mt. Chimborazo (20,561 ft) in Ecuador replaced as the then postulated highest mountain in the world. Dhaulagiri enjoyed this standing for nearly 30 years until the discovery of Kanchenjunga (28,169 ft.), which, again, was falsely believed to be the world's highest peak until the survey carried out by George Everest some years later put Mt. Everest at the top of the standing.
