Cho-Oyu (8,201 m), in the Tibetan language, means "The Turquoise Goddess”. It is the sixth highest mountain in the world and is located to the west of Mt. Everest (the highest) and Lhotse (the fourth highest), all of which are situated in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal along the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
Just a few kilometers west of Cho-Oyu is Nangpa La, a glaciated pass that has served as the main trade route between the Sherpas of the Khumbu region and the Tibetans since ages. With Cho-Oyu's proximity to Nangpa La and the moderate slopes of the northwest ridge route, which is the standard route used by mountaineering expeditions, alpinists consider Cho-Oyu to be the easiest 8000-m peak to climb compared to the other 'eight thousanders'. Cho-Oyu was the third 8000-m peak to be scaled and the first one to be climbed during the Autumn season. It was first attempted on October 19, 1954 by the Austrian, Herbert Tichy, along with Sepp Jochler and Pasang Dawa Lama.
