Annapurna (8,091 m), a gigantic Himalayan massif, is the 10th highest mountain in the world. It holds the distinction of becoming the first 8,000-m peak to be successfully ascended back in 1950 by Maurice Herzog. The mountain is located east of the deepest gorge in the world cut through the Himalaya by the Kali Gandaki River. To the west of the gorge lies the Dhaulagiri region. The waters of the glaciers on Annapurna's western and north-western slopes drain into this gorge.
Annapurna is a Sanskrit word that can be translated as "Goddess of Plenty", or simply, "The Provider". The Annapurna range is made up of many lofty peaks out of which five are labeled using different variations of the name "Annapurna". Of these five peaks, the two highest ones – Annapurna I and II – stand like bookends on the western and eastern extremes of the massif.
